Five qualities you must have to succeed in IT profession

With computers becoming more important than ever, every business needs a dependable IT staff. This means there is a huge demand for IT professionals.

On the down side, this also means that there is no shortage of such professionals in the market. However, not everyone is cut out for the job. Just because you have a computer programming course or technical training under your belt, does not imply you are a fit for the IT profession. Here are the 5 qualities every IT professional needs in order to succeed in this cutthroat business.

Technical Skills

The importance of this quality cannot be overstated. In order to succeed in the IT profession, you need to have more than a working knowledge of computing systems, the many things that can go wrong with it and how to deal with each and every one of them. The IT profession is a challenging career option. You will be faced with new problems every day. Users and clients don’t want to hear you say you can’t resolve their issue. If that happens, you will be replaced by someone who can.

Persistence and Perseverance

Computing devices and network systems etc. aren’t the most cooperative devices. There will often be moments when the fix suggested by a textbook, guide, or other source fails to work. At times like these, it is easy to want to vent out your frustration at the device or by lashing out at the customer. However, this is hardly useful. As an IT professional, you need to be patient and persistent. You need to deliver excellence every day, and you also need to look good while delivering it.

Desire to Learn

With new software and updates of the older versions hitting the market every day, there is a lot to learn for an IT professional to be successful. The skills required to deal with Windows might not apply on the Linux Operating Software. Similarly, the network protocols are constantly evolving. In order to avoid becoming obsolete, you need to be on your toes and up to date with all the latest technological advancement and update.

People Skills

This quality is a prerequisite for just about any job. However, in the IT profession, it becomes even more important. This is because you will be dealing with the end user or clients directly. More often than not, these clients will be in a state of distress when you are called upon. You need to be empathic and appear in control of the situation. Why else would they trust you to be able to fix their technical problems? Moreover, if you are a solo consultant, you need to develop networking skills. This will make sure that whenever a computer breaks down, or a device malfunctions, the users know who to call. Finally, technical failure is often a recurring issue. Once you fix some problem, there is no guarantee that some other problem won’t arise later down the road. You need to leave a good enough impression on the client the first time, in order to warrant a call, the second time around.

Strong Analytic and Improvisation Skills

To be successful in the IT profession, you need to be able to effectively analyze a problem, figure out a solution and apply it. In the case this proposed fix does not work, then you need to think on your feet and improvise. Rinse and repeat as many times as necessary. If the client called you, they expect you to figure out the solution. So, you can’t just give up.
